Religious Education for Children
Parish School of Religion
Your child’s religious education is important to us. The Parish School of Religion assists you as the primary teachers of your children to encourage your children to learn more about the person and message of Christ. The program helps each student know, understand and appreciate the basic teaching of the Church and their role as baptized Catholics. It helps each child feel that they are an integral part of the Catholic Church and St. Raphael’s community, and encourages active participation in the life of the parish. Families who enroll in the PSR program are expected to be active members of the parish.
The Parish School of Religion offers formation and sacramental preparation for children in first grade through confirmation. To serve our multi-cultural community, classes for students in 1st to 8th grade are offered on Sunday morning in English (10:15-11:30am) and bi-lingual (Spanish/English) classes are offered on Saturday mornings (8:45-10:00 and 10:15–11:30am). Confirmation classes are held on Mondays from 7:00-8:30pm twice per month.
To participate in preparation for the sacrament of First Eucharist, students are expected to have participated in a school or parish religious education program at least a full yearbefore preparing for First Eucharist.
The Confirmation Program is a two-year program for high school students. As teens enrolled in the Confirmation program seek to complete their initiation into the Catholic Church and become full, mature members, they are expected to complete a minimum of 25 service hours in the parish or the community, participate in the monthly Youth Mass on the first Sunday at 9:00am, and attend a day-long retreat in the spring.
Catechists and Teachers Aids
We welcome those who want to share their gift of faith with our PSR students as a catechist or aid. Support and training is provided to help them more deeply understand and grow in their own faith and to develop effective methods for sharing the faith with children. In addition, teachers may receive religious education certification by taking courses in doctrine, scripture, morality, sacraments, and methodology for various age levels.
